In India, the pursuit of technical proficiency and subject matter expertise has long been ingrained in the cultural and educational ethos. From a young age, individuals are encouraged to excel in academic disciplines, with a strong emphasis on engineering, medicine, and other technical fields. As a result, there's a prevalent belief that success and career advancement hinge primarily on one's technical skills, qualifications, and subject matter expertise. However, this singular focus often leads to the neglect of equally important soft skills and networking, hindering holistic career growth.


One of the primary reasons behind this mindset is the deeply entrenched notion of meritocracy. In a fiercely competitive environment where opportunities seem scarce, individuals believe that excelling in technical domains will naturally propel them forward. Consequently, they invest significant time and effort in acquiring technical knowledge and qualifications, often overlooking the importance of soft skills such as communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence.


Moreover, the Indian education system, while robust in technical education, often falls short in nurturing soft skills development. Rote learning and exam-oriented curricula prioritize theoretical knowledge over practical application and interpersonal skills. In traditional corporate environments, seniority or tenure has long been (erroneously) regarded as a key determinant of career advancement. The prevailing belief, perhaps stemming from Indian family-run businesses, was that loyalty and longevity within an organization would naturally lead to opportunities for growth, promotion, and career advancement. However, in today's dynamic and rapidly evolving workplaces, this notion no longer holds true.


One of the fundamental reasons why seniority doesn't always translate to growth is the changing nature of work itself. In the past, employees may have spent decades within a single role or department, gradually climbing the hierarchical ladder through incremental promotions. However, in today's knowledge-based economy, the pace of change is relentless, and organizations require agility and adaptability from their workforce. Roles evolve, new skill sets emerge, and individuals must demonstrate the ability to learn, innovate, and pivot in response to shifting market demands.


Moreover, the correlation between tenure and competence is not always straightforward.
