If you grew up in an Indian household, you know the struggle.
You ask your mom, "Why do I have to eat curd and sugar before my exam?"She says, "It’s good luck."You ask, "Why can’t I cut my nails at night?"She says, "Bad things will happen."You ask, "Why are we fasting today?"She says, "Bas, karte hain." (We just do it).
For decades, we’ve filed these things under "Superstition." We assumed that our ancestors were just scared of the dark or trying to appease angry gods. We rolled our eyes, packed our bags for the city, and replaced our copper water jugs with plastic bottles and our Surya Namaskar with gym memberships.
But then, a funny thing happened.
Silicon Valley started selling us "Intermittent Fasting" for weight loss.Wellness influencers started preaching about "Grounding" by walking barefoot.Coffee shops started selling "Turmeric Lattes" for $6.
Wait a minute.Fasting? That’s just Ekadashi without the religious guilt.Grounding? That’s just walking into a temple without shoes.Turmeric Latte? That’s Haldi Doodh!
It turns out, your Dadi wasn't superstitious. She was a bio-hacker. She just didn't have the peer-reviewed papers to prove it.
Decoding the Ancient "Apps"
In my new book, "Logic, Magic, or Just Habit?", I dove deep into the rabbit hole of Indian traditions. I wanted to see if there was any method to the madness.
What I found blew my mind.
Our ancestors didn't see religion and science as separate things. They understood that the human body (the hardware) needs to align with nature (the operating system). They encoded sophisticated hygiene, psychology, and medical protocols into "Rituals" to ensure people actually followed them.
Here is a sneak peek at three rituals that are actually pure science:
1. The Temple Bell is Not a Doorbell: We enter a temple and ring the bell. Why? To wake up God? No. A proper temple bell is made of a specific alloy that creates a distinct sound to unite the left and right hemispheres of the brain. It clears the "noise" of your thoughts so you can actually focus. It’s acoustic therapy.
2. Namaste is the Ultimate Hygiene Hack: Long before social distancing, we had Namaste. It connects the pressure points in the fingers to the eyes and ears (acupressure) while ensuring you don't swap sweat and bacteria with a stranger (hygiene). It’s the perfect greeting.
3. Sleeping North is a Magnetic Issue: "Don't sleep with your head to the North." Ghost story? Nope. Physics. The earth is a magnet. Your body has its own magnetic field (and iron in the blood). Sleeping North-South aligns similar poles, creating subtle repulsion and blood pressure shifts that can disrupt sleep quality.
Bridging the Gap
We are living in a time where we have lost the "Why" but kept the "How."
This book is my attempt to find the "Why" again. It explores 100 Hindu Rituals—from the kitchen to the cremation ground—stripping away the dogma to find the wisdom.
It is for the skeptic who needs logic.It is for the believer who wants valid arguments.And it is for every person who wants to reconnect with their roots without turning off their brain.
