For most of my life, I considered myself a man of structure, of words and strategies. With a career spanning three decades in the corporate world and nearly thirty books to my name, I understood how to build things—businesses, narratives, fictional worlds. But it was only by collaborating on a project with my wife, Prema, that I truly understood the most profound architecture of all: the design of a peaceful and vital life.
Today, I am not just announcing a book. I am sharing the culmination of a journey—a journey into what it means to be truly well. Prema and I are overjoyed to introduce you to “The Eternal Breath: Rediscovering Yoga & Pranayama Beyond the Mat.”
The Question That Started It All
The genesis of this book wasn't a marketing plan or a publishing slot. It was a simple, recurring observation. As a certified Yoga Teacher from the venerable Yoga Institute in Mumbai, Prema has spent years guiding people on the mat. Time and again, she would meet students who were technically proficient—they could hold a perfect Warrior II, they could flow through a Vinyasa—but they were still struggling. They were battling the same chronic stress, the same gnawing anxiety, the same sense of depletion that they had walked in with.
They were doing yoga, but they were missing its soul.
The missing piece, she realized, was the very thing we do unconsciously over 20,000 times a day: the breath.
In the modern rush to commercialize yoga as a fitness trend, the profound, life-altering science of Pranayama—the conscious regulation of breath—has been largely forgotten. It has been relegated to a brief opening or closing exercise, when in fact, it is the very heart of the practice.
This book was born from a shared conviction: we had to clear the air. We needed to write a guide that would lead people back to the authentic source of yoga’s power.
A Collaboration of Heart and Structure
“The Eternal Breath” is a unique partnership. Prema is the heart and soul of this work. She brings not just the impeccable lineage of her training but also the deep, compassionate wisdom forged over years of teaching—from personalized therapeutic sessions to her selfless work with underprivileged communities. She has seen firsthand how these ancient techniques can heal, empower, and transform lives. Her wisdom forms the core of every page.
My role was that of the structural architect. With my experience in writing, I had the privilege of taking Prema’s profound, experiential knowledge and building a framework around it—a structure that would be accessible, engaging, and meticulously researched for the modern reader. We wanted to create a book that could speak to both the sincere spiritual seeker and the evidence-focused sceptic.
What Lies Beyond the Mat?
This book is a journey in three parts:
Reclaiming Authenticity: We first deconstruct the myths. We challenge the pervasive "yoga body" ideal and the dilution of yoga into a mere workout. We guide you back to the four authentic schools of India that have preserved this science with integrity, explaining not just what they teach, but why it matters.
The Science of Your Inner Pharmacy: This is where we bridge ancient wisdom with modern validation. We delve into the global research from institutions like Harvard Medical School, NIMHANS, and AIIMS to show you how yoga and pranayama work. You will discover how conscious breathing can literally rewire your brain, regulate your stress hormones, restore deep sleep, fortify your immune system, and help prevent and heal chronic lifestyle diseases.
The Art of Living: Finally, we empower you to make this practice your own. We provide comprehensive guides to asanas, mudras, and the indispensable role of a teacher. Most importantly, we show you how to design a personal practice that adapts to your unique life, your energy, and your needs. The final chapters expand this vision, exploring how a personal practice can ripple outward to create a more peaceful and inclusive society.
This is not a book about escaping the world. It’s about cultivating the inner resources to engage with it more fully, with more peace, more resilience, and more joy.
